IP Chemistry practical exams test skills that cannot be learnt from textbooks alone. Our Chemistry tutors share the key laboratory skills and practical exam techniques that top IP students use.
IP Chemistry practical exams assess skills that are distinct from written paper skills: experimental technique, observation, data recording, and analysis. Many students who excel in written papers underperform in practicals because they have not developed these specific skills. Here is how to excel.

In qualitative analysis practicals, examiners award marks for precise observations, not conclusions. Write what you see, not what you think it means. Instead of "the solution turned blue because copper ions are present", write "a blue precipitate formed which dissolved in excess NaOH to give a deep blue solution".
Always record raw data to the correct number of decimal places (e.g., burette readings to 2 decimal places: 24.35 cm³, not 24.4 cm³). Include units for every measurement. Never erase data — cross out errors with a single line and write the correct value beside it.

For acid-base titrations: rinse the burette with the solution you will fill it with (not water). Fill to just above the 0.00 cm³ mark, then allow to drain to 0.00 cm³. Add indicator (2-3 drops). Perform a rough titration first, then 2-3 concordant titrations (within 0.10 cm³ of each other). Use the average of concordant results.
Practical Tip: Always check for air bubbles in the burette tip before starting. An air bubble that disappears during titration will give a falsely high titre reading.
