How to Write a Band 1 GP Essay: Structure, Arguments & Examples

By Ms Agnes Tan·2025-11-15·9 min read

General Paper essays are marked on the quality of your arguments, not just your knowledge. Our GP tutors share the exact framework used by Band 1 students to structure compelling, well-evidenced essays.

General Paper is unique among A-Level subjects because it rewards critical thinking and the ability to construct well-reasoned arguments more than factual recall. Yet many students approach GP essays the same way they approach content-heavy subjects — by memorising facts and examples without understanding how to build a compelling argument.

The Band 1 Essay Framework

Band 1 essays (marks 40-50) are characterised by: a clear, arguable thesis in the introduction; body paragraphs that develop a single, focused argument; specific, well-chosen examples that directly support the argument; acknowledgement and refutation of counter-arguments; and a conclusion that synthesises the argument rather than merely summarising it.

How to Write a Strong Introduction

Your introduction must do three things: (1) contextualise the question with a broad observation about the topic, (2) define any key terms in the question, and (3) state your thesis — your overall answer to the question. Avoid starting with a dictionary definition or a rhetorical question, as these are considered weak openings by examiners.

The PEEL Paragraph Structure

  • Point — State your argument clearly in one sentence
  • Evidence — Provide a specific example, statistic, or case study
  • Explanation — Explain HOW the evidence supports your point
  • Link — Connect back to the question and your thesis

Building a Bank of Current Affairs Examples

Band 1 essays use specific, recent examples rather than generic ones. Build a personal bank of 20-30 examples across topics like technology, environment, politics, economics, and social issues. For each example, note: what happened, when, where, and what it demonstrates about human behaviour or society.

💡

Exam Tip: Quality beats quantity. One well-developed example with clear explanation is worth more than three examples mentioned superficially.
