JC H2 Biology Exam Techniques: How to Answer Every Question Type

H2 Biology exams are designed to test higher-order thinking, not just factual recall. Students who memorise content without developing exam technique consistently underperform relative to their knowledge level. Here are the techniques our JC Biology tutors at Sophia Education teach for every question type.

MCQ Technique: Elimination and Reasoning

For H2 Biology MCQs, use elimination: identify and cross out options that are clearly wrong, then reason between the remaining options. Many MCQs have two plausible options — the correct one is usually more precise, more complete, or more directly relevant to the question stem.

Structured Questions: The PEEL Framework

For structured questions requiring explanation: Point (state the biological principle), Evidence (refer to specific molecules, structures, or processes), Explanation (explain the mechanism step by step), Link (connect back to the question). Always use precise biological terminology.

Data Analysis Questions

For data analysis: (1) Describe the trend shown in the data (use specific values), (2) Explain the trend using biological knowledge, (3) Evaluate the experimental design if asked. Always quote specific values from the data when describing trends — do not just say "increases", say "increases from 20 to 80 units".

Free Response Questions: Planning Before Writing

For free response questions worth 8-12 marks, spend 2-3 minutes planning your answer before writing. Identify the key concepts to cover, the order in which to present them, and any diagrams that would help. A well-planned answer is always better than a long, disorganised one.
