Mechanics forms the foundation of H2 Physics and accounts for a significant portion of A-Level marks. Master the systematic approach our tutors use to help JC students tackle even the most complex mechanics problems.
Mechanics is the bedrock of H2 Physics. Without a solid understanding of kinematics, Newton's laws, and energy conservation, students will struggle with every subsequent topic. At Sophia Education, we teach mechanics using a systematic problem-solving framework that works for every question type.

Every mechanics problem should begin with a free body diagram (FBD). Draw the object as a point mass, then draw every force acting on it as an arrow. Label each force with its magnitude and direction. This single habit prevents 80% of mechanics errors.
For problems involving inclined planes, always set up your coordinate system along and perpendicular to the slope. This simplifies the algebra enormously compared to using horizontal and vertical axes.

Circular motion confuses students because the centripetal force is not a separate force — it is the net force directed towards the centre of the circle. Common mistakes include: (1) adding centripetal force as an extra force in the FBD, (2) confusing centripetal acceleration with tangential acceleration, and (3) forgetting that the normal force changes at different points on a vertical circle.
Pro Tip: For vertical circular motion, always analyse the top and bottom of the circle separately. At the top, both gravity and normal force point downward (toward centre). At the bottom, gravity points down but normal force points up.
Many mechanics problems can be solved using either Newton's laws or energy conservation. Energy methods are often faster when the problem involves a change in position (height) and you need to find a speed. Newton's laws are better when you need to find forces or accelerations at a specific instant.
Sophia Education's JC Physics classes focus on building problem-solving intuition through worked examples and guided practice. Our tutors identify each student's specific weaknesses and address them directly in every lesson.
