H2 and H1 subjects have different difficulty levels and time commitments. This guide explains the differences and helps you choose which subjects to take at each level.
At JC, subjects are offered at different levels: H2 (Higher 2) and H1 (Higher 1). Understanding the differences helps you make strategic subject choices that align with your strengths and university goals.
H2 subjects are taken at a higher level of depth and difficulty. They require 4 hours of lessons per week and cover more content than H1. H2 subjects are typically required for university courses in related fields. For example, NUS Engineering requires H2 Mathematics and H2 Physics.

H1 subjects are taken at a lower level of difficulty. They require 2 hours of lessons per week and cover less content than H2. H1 subjects are more flexible and are often used to explore interests outside your main specialisation. Most universities accept H1 subjects for general education requirements.
Take H2 in subjects that: (1) You excel in, (2) Are required for your target university course, (3) You plan to specialise in. Take H1 in subjects that: (1) You find interesting but not specialising in, (2) You want to explore without heavy workload, (3) You need for general education requirements.
Pro Tip: Most students take 3-4 H2 subjects and 1-2 H1 subjects. Don't take too many H2 subjects unless you are confident you can manage the workload.
