The Chinese Oral Examination is worth 20% of your O-Level Chinese grade. Our Chinese tutors share 8 proven tips to help you score distinction in both the reading and conversation components.
The O-Level Chinese Oral Examination is a component that many students neglect until it is too late. Yet it accounts for 20% of your final grade and can be the difference between an A1 and a B3. Our Chinese tutors at Sophia Education have helped hundreds of students improve their oral scores dramatically with these 8 tips.

The single most effective way to improve your reading aloud score is to practise reading Chinese text aloud every day. Read newspaper articles, short stories, or past-year oral passages. Focus on pronunciation (声调 — tones), rhythm, and clarity.
Incorrect tones are the most common source of marks lost in reading aloud. Record yourself reading and compare with a native speaker. Pay special attention to the third tone (上声) which is often mispronounced, and to tone sandhi rules (e.g., two consecutive third tones).
O-Level Chinese oral conversation topics typically cover: family, school life, hobbies, environment, technology, and social issues. For each topic, learn 10-15 useful phrases and expressions that you can use naturally in conversation.

For conversation questions, structure your answer as: 观点 (point of view) → 理由 (reason) → 例子 (example). This gives your response a clear structure that examiners appreciate and ensures you say enough to score well.
