How to Score Full Marks in O-Level English Comprehension

By Ms Fong Mei Ling·2025-11-10·7 min read

O-Level English Comprehension is where many students lose unnecessary marks. Our English tutors share the exact techniques used by top students to score full marks in every comprehension question type.

O-Level English Comprehension (Paper 2) is a paper where students consistently underperform relative to their actual English ability. The reason is not a lack of language skills — it is a lack of technique. Our English tutors at Sophia Education have identified the specific techniques that top students use to score full marks.

Understanding the Question Types

  • Literal questions — answers are directly stated in the text
  • Inferential questions — answers require reading between the lines
  • Vocabulary questions — explain the meaning of a word/phrase in context
  • Summary questions — identify and paraphrase key points
  • Personal response questions — give your opinion with justification

The Golden Rule: Answer in Your Own Words

Unless the question specifically asks you to quote from the text, always paraphrase your answer. Copying directly from the passage earns zero marks for vocabulary and comprehension questions. Show the examiner that you understand the meaning, not just that you can copy text.

How to Answer Inference Questions

Inference questions ask you to deduce something that is implied but not directly stated. Use the formula: "The writer suggests [inference] because [evidence from text]." Always anchor your inference to specific words or phrases in the passage.

Summary Writing — The 3-Step Approach

Step 1: Identify the relevant paragraph(s) in the passage. Step 2: Identify the key points (usually 8-10 points for a summary worth 8 marks). Step 3: Paraphrase each point in your own words, connecting them with appropriate linking words. Your summary must be within the word limit.

💡

Time Management Tip: Spend no more than 5 minutes on the first passage (shorter, more literal questions) and 25 minutes on the second passage (longer, more inferential questions). Save 10 minutes for summary writing.
