O-Level Subject Combinations Guide: How to Choose Your 7-9 Subjects
Choosing your O-Level subjects is a critical decision. This guide helps you select 7-9 subjects that align with your strengths, interests, and future goals.
At the end of Secondary 2, students must choose their O-Level subject combination. This decision affects your academic workload, your JC subject options, and your university pathway. Choosing wisely is essential.
Compulsory Subjects
All students must take: English Language, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics, and Science (either combined or separate Physics and Chemistry). These 4-5 subjects are non-negotiable.
Elective Subjects (Choose 2-5)
You then choose 2-5 elective subjects from options like: Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Literature, Economics, Computing, Art, Music, Design & Technology. Choose based on: (1) Your strengths, (2) Your interests, (3) Your JC and university goals.
Subject Selection Strategy
- ✓Choose at least 1 subject you excel in to boost your overall grade
- ✓Choose at least 1 subject you find genuinely interesting
- ✓If aiming for JC Science, take both Physics and Chemistry
- ✓If aiming for JC Humanities, take History or Geography
- ✓Don't take too many difficult subjects simultaneously
