PSLE Chinese: A Parent's Complete Guide to Helping Your Child Score AL1

By Ms Cynthia Lee·2025-11-22·9 min read

Many parents feel helpless when it comes to supporting their child in PSLE Chinese, especially if their own Chinese is not strong. This guide gives you practical strategies to help your child improve, regardless of your own Chinese level.

PSLE Chinese is a subject where parental support can make a significant difference, but many parents feel unsure how to help, especially if they are not confident in Chinese themselves. At Sophia Education, our Chinese tutors work closely with parents to provide strategies that work at home as well as in the classroom.

Understanding the PSLE Chinese Paper Structure

  • Paper 1 (Writing) — Composition (30 marks) + Situational Writing (10 marks)
  • Paper 2 (Language Use) — Vocabulary, Grammar, Comprehension (70 marks)
  • Oral Examination — Reading Aloud (10 marks) + Conversation (20 marks)
  • Listening Comprehension — 20 marks

Home Strategies That Work

Even if your Chinese is not strong, you can help your child by: (1) watching Chinese TV programmes or YouTube channels together, (2) reading Chinese picture books or comics with your child, (3) encouraging your child to keep a simple Chinese diary (3-5 sentences daily), and (4) using Chinese vocabulary apps for 10 minutes daily.

The Vocabulary Building Strategy

PSLE Chinese requires a vocabulary of approximately 2,000 characters. The most effective way to build vocabulary is through reading — not rote memorisation. Encourage your child to read Chinese books at their level every day. When they encounter an unfamiliar character, look it up together and use it in a sentence.

Composition Writing Tips

For Chinese composition, teach your child the 六要素 (six elements): 时间 (time), 地点 (place), 人物 (characters), 起因 (cause), 经过 (process), 结果 (result). Every good composition should include all six elements. Also encourage the use of 成语 (idioms) — 2-3 well-placed idioms can significantly boost the composition score.
