PSLE English Composition: How to Write a Story That Scores AL1

By Ms Agnes Tan·2025-11-30·8 min read

PSLE English Composition is worth 40 marks and is one of the most important components of the English paper. Our English tutors share the exact techniques that help Primary students write stories that score AL1.

PSLE English Composition (Paper 1, Section B) is worth 40 marks and requires students to write a story of 150-300 words based on 3 pictures. Many students struggle not because they lack ideas, but because they do not know how to structure a compelling story within the word limit. Here is how our tutors at Sophia Education teach it.

The 3-Part Story Structure

Every PSLE composition should have: (1) Introduction — set the scene, introduce the character, and hint at the problem (2-3 sentences); (2) Body — describe the main event or problem and how the character responds (the bulk of the story); (3) Conclusion — resolve the problem and include a reflection or lesson learnt (2-3 sentences).

Using the 3 Pictures Effectively

Students must use all 3 pictures in their story, but they do not have to follow the order shown. The pictures should inspire your story, not constrain it. Look for a connecting theme across the 3 pictures and build your story around that theme.

Vocabulary That Impresses Examiners

  • Use precise verbs: "sprinted" instead of "ran fast", "whispered" instead of "said quietly"
  • Use sensory details: describe what the character sees, hears, smells, and feels
  • Use figurative language: similes ("as fast as lightning"), metaphors ("his heart was a drum"), personification
  • Vary sentence length: mix short, punchy sentences with longer, descriptive ones for rhythm
  • Use dialogue: a line or two of dialogue makes the story more vivid and engaging
💡

Parent Tip: Read good stories with your child regularly. Reading widely is the single best way to improve writing — children absorb vocabulary, sentence structures, and storytelling techniques naturally through reading.

💡

Sophia Education's PSLE English tutors provide personalised feedback on every composition your child writes, helping them develop their unique voice and storytelling skills.
