After teaching hundreds of PSLE students, our tutors have identified the most common Mathematics mistakes. Learn what they are and how to avoid them.
PSLE Mathematics mistakes often cost students 5-10 marks unnecessarily. Many of these mistakes are preventable with awareness and practice. Here are the most common mistakes our tutors see, and how to avoid them.
Students rush through questions and miss critical details like "nearest 10", "to 2 decimal places", or "in metres". Always read the question twice before answering. Underline the key requirements.

Simple calculation mistakes (e.g., 7 × 8 = 54 instead of 56) cost easy marks. Always double-check arithmetic, especially in multi-step problems. Use a calculator if allowed.
PSLE awards method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong. Always show every step clearly. Write each calculation on a new line.
Students forget to convert units (e.g., metres to centimetres, hours to minutes). Always check the units in the question and convert if necessary.
Word problems require careful reading. Identify what is given, what is asked, and which operations are needed. Draw a diagram if helpful.
Exam Tip: Spend the first 5 minutes reading all questions carefully. Identify which are easier and which are harder. Attempt easier questions first to build confidence.
