Singapore Secondary School Streaming System Explained: Express vs Normal

By Ms Fong Mei Ling·2026-02-12·7 min read

Understanding Singapore's secondary school streaming system helps parents and students make informed decisions. This guide explains Express vs Normal streams and how to succeed in each.

Singapore's secondary school streaming system divides students into Express and Normal streams based on PSLE results. Understanding how streaming works helps parents and students set realistic goals and plan their secondary school journey effectively.

Express Stream (4 Years)

Express stream students take 4 years to complete secondary school and sit for O-Level exams at the end of Secondary 4. Typically, students with PSLE aggregate scores of 4-20 are eligible for Express stream. Express stream offers a faster pace and more subject options. Most students who aim for JC and university attend Express stream.

Normal Stream (5 Years)

Normal stream students take 5 years to complete secondary school. They sit for N-Level exams at the end of Secondary 4, and can then choose to take O-Level exams in Secondary 5 (if they perform well in N-Levels) or proceed to polytechnic. Normal stream offers a more manageable pace with 6-7 subjects. Students with PSLE aggregate scores of 21-32 typically attend Normal stream.

Key Differences Between Express and Normal

  • Duration: Express 4 years vs Normal 5 years
  • Pace: Express faster vs Normal more manageable
  • Subjects: Express more options vs Normal fewer subjects
  • Exams: Express O-Levels in Sec 4 vs Normal N-Levels in Sec 4, O-Levels in Sec 5
  • University pathway: Express direct to JC vs Normal via polytechnic or O-Levels

Can You Transfer Between Streams?

Yes, limited transfers are possible. Express students who struggle can transfer to Normal stream. Normal stream students who excel can transfer to Express stream, though this is less common. Transfers typically happen at the end of Secondary 1 or Secondary 2 based on academic performance.

💡

Parent Tip: Choose the stream that matches your child's pace and learning style, not just their PSLE score. A student who is comfortable in Normal stream will perform better than an Express student who is constantly struggling.
