Understanding Singapore's Education System: A Complete Guide for Parents

Singapore's education system is world-renowned for its rigour and effectiveness, but it can also be complex and stressful for both students and parents. Understanding the system — its pathways, milestones, and options — helps parents make informed decisions and support their children more effectively.

Primary School (Ages 7-12): PSLE

Primary school culminates in the PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) at the end of Primary 6. The PSLE uses Achievement Levels (AL1-AL8) for each subject, with AL1 being the highest. The total PSLE score determines secondary school placement. Students with lower PSLE scores may still access good secondary schools through Direct School Admission (DSA).

Secondary School (Ages 13-16): O-Levels or IP

Secondary school students either follow the O-Level pathway (4-5 years, culminating in the O-Level exam) or the Integrated Programme (IP, 6 years, bypassing O-Levels and leading directly to A-Levels or IB). IP schools include Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, and NUS High School.

Junior College (Ages 17-18): A-Levels

Junior College is a 2-year programme leading to the A-Level examinations. Students typically take 3-4 H2 subjects, 1 H1 subject, and General Paper. A-Level results determine university admission. The University Admissions Score (UAS) is calculated from the best 3 H2 subjects + H1 Mother Tongue + H1 GP.

University Pathways

Singapore has 6 autonomous universities: NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, and SUSS. Entry is primarily based on A-Level results (or polytechnic GPA for those who took the polytechnic route). Competitive courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering at NUS/NTU require very high A-Level scores.
