7 Common H2 Mathematics Mistakes JC Students Make (And How to Fix Them)

By Mr Jimmy Lim·2025-12-10·8 min read

H2 Mathematics is one of the most challenging A-Level subjects. After teaching hundreds of JC students, our tutors have identified the 7 most common mistakes that cost students marks — and exactly how to fix them.

H2 Mathematics is notorious for being one of the most demanding A-Level subjects in Singapore. Every year, our tutors at Sophia Education work with hundreds of JC1 and JC2 students, and we consistently see the same patterns of mistakes appearing in their work. The good news? Once you know what these mistakes are, they are entirely avoidable.

Mistake 1: Skipping the "Show That" Steps

Many students lose easy marks in "show that" questions by jumping straight to the answer without showing all intermediate steps. Examiners award method marks for every logical step. Always write out each line clearly, even if the algebra seems obvious to you.

Mistake 2: Mishandling Modulus in Inequalities

When solving inequalities involving modulus, students frequently forget to consider both the positive and negative cases. For example, |x - 2| < 3 must be solved as -3 < x - 2 < 3, not just x - 2 < 3. This single error can cause students to lose 3-4 marks per question.

Mistake 3: Forgetting Domain Restrictions in Functions

When working with composite functions or inverse functions, students often forget to state the domain of the resulting function. In H2 Math, an answer without the correct domain is considered incomplete and will not receive full marks.

Mistake 4: Integration by Parts — Wrong Choice of u and dv

The LIATE rule (Logarithm, Inverse trig, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential) helps you choose which function to differentiate (u) and which to integrate (dv). Students who ignore this rule often end up with integrals that are more complex than the original.

💡

Pro Tip: When using integration by parts, always check your answer by differentiating it. If you get back the original integrand, you know your answer is correct.

Mistake 5: Not Checking Validity of Maclaurin Series

Maclaurin series expansions are only valid within a certain range of x. Students frequently forget to state the range of validity, or worse, use the expansion outside its valid range. Always check and state the condition for validity.

Mistake 6: Probability — Confusing "At Least" with "Exactly"

"At least one" means P(X ≥ 1) = 1 - P(X = 0), not P(X = 1). This is one of the most common errors in the Probability and Statistics section. Always read the question carefully and identify whether it asks for "at least", "at most", or "exactly".

Mistake 7: Rushing Through Vectors Without Drawing Diagrams

Vectors questions in H2 Math often involve 3D geometry that is difficult to visualise mentally. Students who skip drawing a diagram frequently make errors in setting up equations for lines and planes. Always take 30 seconds to sketch the geometric situation before attempting the algebra.
