O-Level Biology requires precise scientific language and a deep understanding of biological processes. Our Biology tutors reveal the 5 most common mistakes that prevent students from scoring A1 — and exactly how to fix them.
Every year, our O-Level Biology tutors at Sophia Education review hundreds of student scripts and see the same mistakes appearing repeatedly. These mistakes are not due to a lack of intelligence — they are due to specific misconceptions and bad habits that, once corrected, can dramatically improve a student's grade.

O-Level Biology examiners are strict about scientific language. Writing "the cell gets bigger" instead of "the cell increases in volume due to osmosis" will cost you marks. Always use the correct scientific term: osmosis (not "water moves in"), diffusion (not "particles spread out"), active transport (not "energy is used to move particles").
This is one of the most commonly confused topics. Students must be able to state clearly: Mitosis produces 2 genetically identical diploid cells (for growth and repair). Meiosis produces 4 genetically different haploid cells (for sexual reproduction). Crossing over occurs in meiosis but not mitosis.

Many students memorise that "insulin lowers blood glucose" without understanding the mechanism. Examiners ask "how" questions: How does insulin lower blood glucose? (Answer: Insulin stimulates liver and muscle cells to convert glucose to glycogen, and increases glucose uptake by cells.) Always understand the mechanism, not just the outcome.
Data-based questions require you to read values accurately from graphs and draw conclusions. Common errors include: reading the wrong axis, failing to include units in answers, and making conclusions that go beyond what the data shows. Always state what the data shows before drawing a conclusion.
O-Level Biology Paper 2 is time-pressured. Students who only practise MCQs are unprepared for the extended writing required in structured questions. Practise writing full, complete answers to structured questions within the allocated time.
Sophia Education's O-Level Biology classes are limited to 4 students per class, ensuring every student gets personalised feedback on their written answers. Book a trial lesson today.
