One of the most important decisions Secondary 3 students face is whether to take Combined Science or Pure Science. This guide helps you make the right choice based on your strengths, interests, and future plans.
Every year, Secondary 2 students and their parents face a critical decision: Combined Science or Pure Science? This choice affects not just O-Level grades but also JC subject combinations and university course eligibility. At Sophia Education, our tutors have helped hundreds of students navigate this decision.

Combined Science covers two science subjects (typically Biology/Chemistry or Physics/Chemistry) in a single subject. It is worth 2 O-Level subject slots and is assessed as a single paper. Students who take Combined Science typically have more time for other subjects.
Pure Science means taking each science subject separately — Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology as individual subjects, each with its own full syllabus and separate exam. Pure Science students study each subject in greater depth.

Important: If you plan to take H2 Chemistry at JC, you MUST take Pure Chemistry at O-Level. Combined Science (Chemistry) is not accepted as a prerequisite for H2 Chemistry at most JCs.
Sophia Education offers both Combined Science and Pure Science tuition. Our tutors can help you assess your child's strengths and make the right subject combination decision. Contact us for a free consultation.
