This choice affects not just O-Level grades but also JC subject combinations and university course eligibility. What is Combined Science?

Combined Science covers two science subjects (typically Biology/Chemistry or Physics/Chemistry) in a single subject. It is worth 2 O-Level subject slots and is assessed as a single paper. Students who take Combined Science typically have more time for other subjects.

What is Pure Science?

Pure Science means taking each science subject separately — Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology as individual subjects, each with its own full syllabus and separate exam. Pure Science students study each subject in greater depth.

Who Should Take Pure Science?

  • Students who are strong in science and enjoy it
  • Students who plan to take science subjects at JC (H2 Chemistry, H2 Biology, H2 Physics)
  • Students who want to pursue medicine, engineering, or science at university
  • Students who are in the top 30% of their cohort academically

Who Should Take Combined Science?

  • Students whose strengths lie in humanities, languages, or mathematics
  • Students who want to take more humanities subjects at O-Level
  • Students who find science challenging and want to manage their workload
  • Students who plan to take arts stream at JC
💡

Important: If you plan to take H2 Chemistry at JC, you MUST take Pure Chemistry at O-Level. Combined Science (Chemistry) is not accepted as a prerequisite for H2 Chemistry at most JCs.
