The 4 PSLE Math Skills That Help Students Boost Grades 2x Faster

By Mr Low Kian Seng·2025-12-12·7 min read

After teaching hundreds of Primary 5 and 6 students, our PSLE Math tutors have identified the 4 key skills that separate students who improve quickly from those who struggle. Master these and your child will see results fast.

PSLE Mathematics is not just about knowing formulas — it is about developing specific problem-solving skills that allow students to tackle unfamiliar questions confidently. After years of teaching PSLE Math at Sophia Education, our tutors have identified the 4 skills that make the biggest difference to student results.

Skill 1: Model Drawing (Bar Models)

Bar model drawing is the most powerful tool in PSLE Math. It allows students to visualise complex word problems and identify the relationships between quantities. Students who master bar models can solve problems that seem impossible using algebra alone. Practise drawing models for every word problem, even simple ones.

Skill 2: Working Backwards

Many PSLE Math problems give you the final answer and ask you to find the starting value. The "working backwards" strategy reverses every operation: addition becomes subtraction, multiplication becomes division. This skill is particularly useful for problems involving fractions and percentages.

Skill 3: Identifying the Unit

Many PSLE problems involve ratios and fractions. The key skill is identifying "1 unit" and using it to find all other quantities. Once you know the value of 1 unit, you can find any multiple of it. This skill is the foundation of the "units and parts" method used in Singapore Math.

Skill 4: Checking Answers Systematically

Top PSLE Math students always check their answers by substituting back into the original problem. This takes only 30 seconds per question but can recover 5-10 marks from careless errors. Teach your child to always ask: "Does this answer make sense?"

💡

Parent Tip: Encourage your child to explain their working aloud as they solve problems. If they can explain it clearly, they understand it. If they cannot, they have memorised a method without understanding.

💡

Sophia Education's PSLE Math classes are taught in small groups of 2-4 students, ensuring every child gets personalised attention. Our students consistently improve by 1-2 grade bands within 3 months.
