Word problems are where most Secondary Math students lose marks. This step-by-step guide teaches a systematic approach that works for any word problem, from simple algebra to complex rate-and-ratio questions.
Word problems are the bane of many Secondary Math students. Unlike straightforward calculation questions, word problems require students to extract mathematical information from text, set up equations, and interpret their answers in context. Here is the systematic approach our tutors at Sophia Education teach.

Before writing anything, read the entire problem carefully. Identify: (1) what information is given, (2) what you are asked to find, and (3) any constraints or conditions. Many students start calculating before they understand what the question is asking.
Write down what each variable represents: "Let x = the number of apples" not just "let x = apples". Being precise about what your variable represents prevents confusion later and helps you check whether your answer makes sense.

Translate the words into mathematical expressions. Look for key words: "more than" (+), "less than" (-), "times" (×), "divided by" (÷), "is" or "equals" (=), "at least" (≥), "at most" (≤). Draw a diagram or table if the problem involves rates, ratios, or proportions.
Solve the equation, then check your answer by substituting back into the original problem. Ask: "Does this answer make sense in the context of the problem?" If the problem asks for the number of people and you get 3.7, you know something is wrong.
Sophia Education's Secondary Math tutors provide step-by-step guidance on word problems, helping students develop the systematic thinking skills needed to tackle any question with confidence.
